5 Minute Microwave Berry Cobbler


You might hate me for this. Because, to be honest, I sort of hate myself for this. Unlike those Smarmy Mug Cakes, that we have all been desperate enough to attempt at least once in our lives, this is really good. So good, that I even found myself “recipe testing” it about 17 times in the last month.

You can use frozen berries, if you can’t find them fresh. In California, Strawberries are in season almost all year and I nearly always have them in my fridge. But for the sake of “recipe testing” I used frozen ones and found they work just fine. Obviously, the cooking time is longer, and the water content is higher so it is a bit runnier. But it’s fruit. So that makes it almost like health food….right? Right? (Not really)

5 Minute Microwave Berry Cobbler


  • 3/4 cup Strawberries
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1 tbs white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbs butter
  • 2 tbs milk


  1. Chop berries and add to a mug. Add powdered sugar, stir to combine.
  2. In a separate bowl, add the flour, white sugar, baking powder and mix to combine. Add the butter and rub in with your fingers until combined. Add the milk and stir (I used my hands for this too, less dishes to wash).
  3. Add the dough to the top of the berries (sprinkle with additional sugar, if desired).
  4. Microwave on high for about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.
  5. Allow to cool because this mother will be screaming hot.
  6. *The ratios I used are for a large mason jar mug. This recipe will also make 2 servings in smaller mugs. Make sure to only fill the mug no more than 2/3 full or it will bubble over during "cooking."

      I just tried this and the fruit was good but the cruble on top was like cake. Is it supposed to be that way?? I thought I did the recipe right

        I only used 1 tablespoon of milk and it worked a charm.

    That looks so good! Have you tried using other fruits? I have some apples at home…maybe I will test it out.

      Other berries should work fine. Apples might need to be microwave for a few minutes before hand to soften them up. Let me know how it goes!

      I made it with apples! I did about 3/4 cup thinly sliced apples, brown sugar instead of powdered, tbsp of lemon juice, and cinnamon and cardamon. Then I topped it with the crumble and put it in the micro for about 2 1/2 mins, to make sure the apples cooked. It was delish!

      I just made this with strawberries as well as blueberries because I did not have enough strawberries, and it tasted awesome!!! So other fruit does work. I want to try peach now. Mmmm…

      I made this with blackberries, it was absolutely delectable! Same 3/4 cup of berries, I cut mine into 4ths before measuring. Same recipe, cooked for 1 min 45 sec. Thanks for the amazing recipe!

    I feel kinda silly asking this, but… Do you think it would still “work” if I omitted the powdered sugar, and used white whole wheat flour for the flour?

      Of course on the flour! The powdered sugar you can omit, but it (obviously) wont be as sweet, but powdered sugar also has corn starch in it which acts as a thickener so it will be runnier. Maybe a tsp or so of whole wheat flour and some maple syrup?

          Any fruit is fine, but the baking time will vary. But it won’t rise without baking powder.

    “Take that mug cake” is right! Saw this on FoodGawker and had to pop over. Looks infinitely better than one of those nasty things. No matter how pretty it looks, how much whipped cream and sprinkles go on top, mug cakes are like chewing on a junkyard rubber tire. Can’t wait to try this.

    I JUST finished this! Chased it with a swig of milk out of the mug! It was VERY tasty!!! I had a scant 1/2 cup of frozen, cheap-o blackberries so I diced up a quarter of an Aurora (honey crisp, move over!) apple. I nuked the diced apple for one minute, added berries and a shake of cinnamon. Then I proceeded as directed.

    The berries and apple combo was perfect and precooking the apple DID work (for whoever asked about apple)- my only “complaint” is that the berry mix was just a tad too sweet. Probably my bad as there was probably not quite enough fruit and the apple I used tastes like candy by itself.

      You could split the recipe in half and its still a good size. I also used vanilla protein powder instead of the powdered sugar and used half white half whole wheat flour. Delish!

    I googled what to do with frozen blueberries for dessert and stumbled across this recipe. This is AMAZING. A few tips that i used when i made it was to cut the butter up cold into small chunks and cut it into the flour mix with a fork till you cant really see it THEN add the milk. Also i mixed frozen blueberries with the sugar and microwaved 30 seconds, mixed again, and another 30 seconds till all the sugar could be mixed together with the berries. That way you dont have to compensate for the berries being frozen. In LOVE with this recipe. Thank you for making this!

      There is nothing in this recipe you can’t eat raw so it’s safe to eat.

    I just made one with frozen mixed berries and a combination of brown sugar and caster sugar because I didn’t have any powdered, it worked great. I only made a 2/3 quantity because I didn’t think I was that hungry, but now I want more. I liked the frozen berries making a nice juicy sauce and coating the spoonfuls of cake in it. It was DELICIOUS!

    I tried this with peaches. I guess they just have too much juice in them. The crumble looked fine at first, kinda like a cake laying on top of fruit, but when I stirred it up a bit so I wasn’t eating it one layer at a time it turned back into it’s batter state. Also I tried adding cinnamon to change the smell but it still just smelt like hot, wet flour.
    So many people have commented on how amazing it is so I’m thinking don’t do it with peaches!

      Just made this with one very ripe peach… added a sprinkle of cinnamon to the fruit and cooked it for almost 2:30. I didn’t stir it, just dove deep with my fork for each bite… dying right now it is so good.

    Hi you wont believe this but I added a scant teaspoon of quick cooking oatmeal oats to the flour & butter mixture and it made a crisper topping instead of the cake like one
    My butter was ice cold and incorporated with a pastry cutter

    That strawberry cobbler looks heavenly, will definitely be trying that later. It also has very accessible ingredients that are stored at home so it is not necessary to go hunting for ingredients around town.

    I would love to substitute the regular flour for coconut flour (or any gluten/wheat free flour) but i know coconut flour does NOT substitute by a 1:1 ratio. Does ANYone here know how to alter this recipe successfully to accomplish this?! Please & thank-you!

      You can, but powdered sugar also has cornstarch which acts as a thickener and a stabilizer so it will be soupier if you do.
